The 2024 Membership Marketing Benchmarking Report by Marketing General Incorporated shows that associations are continuing to rebound from the challenges of the past few years and are steadily expanding their membership. One of the questions in the survey asks “What do you believe are the top reasons members join your organization?” which prompts associations to reflect on their core value proposition and understand what motivates members. Ultimately helping them align their offerings with member needs and expectations.

The top reasons given by associations as to why members join their organization:

  1. Networking with others in the field (67%)
  2. Continuing education/ professional certification (42%)
  3. Accessing specialized and/or current information (32%)

Here are five ways associations can enhance networking opportunities for their members:

  1. Host Events both in person and virtually: Associations can organize conferences, workshops, and regional meetups that bring members together. These events provide a platform for members to meet, exchange ideas, and build relationships.
  2. Create Online Networking Platforms: Developing online communities allows members to connect and engage with each other outside of physical events. These platforms can facilitate discussions, idea-sharing, and ongoing professional interactions.
  3. Offer Mentorship Programs: By pairing experienced professionals with newcomers or those seeking guidance, associations can foster meaningful one-on-one connections. Mentorship programs not only provide valuable advice and support but also help build strong, lasting professional relationships.
  4. Facilitate Special Interest Groups: Associations can create subgroups or committees focused on specific areas of interest within the field. These groups allow members with similar passions or professional goals to connect more deeply, share knowledge, and work together on projects or initiatives.
  5. Interactive Member Map with Geo-Tagging: Create an interactive digital map where members can tag their location and interests. This tool could allow members to discover others in their vicinity or with similar interests, facilitating impromptu meetups or collaborations. For added value, the map could include features for arranging local “coffee chats” or “micro-meetups,” where members can connect in small groups.

By innovating how they connect their members, associations can enhance member value and stay relevant. As member needs evolve, those that prioritize and adapt their networking opportunities will foster stronger communities and ensure long-term growth.
